An 11-year-old boy was in police custody after a fire at a Coral Springs department store Thursday, police said.

The Coral Springs Fire Department said the fire occurred on the second floor of the Kohl’s store at 9001 W. Atlantic Blvd.

The sprinklers in the building were activated, and the fire was extinguished before fire crews arrived, officials said.

Witnesses were able to tell police what direction the boy was headed, and officers took him into custody, police said.

Coral Springs police said the 11-year-old boy from Coconut Creek is also accused of starting another fire at the same store on Jan. 9.

Sgt. Kirkland of the Coral Springs Police Department said the boy was seen on surveillance video in the Jan. 9 fire.

Coral Springs police said the first fire caused about $400,000 in damage, and Thursday's fire caused about $600,000 in damage, totaling $1 million in damage.

In both cases, police said, the boy piled up clothing and used lighter fluid and a lighter to torch it. Detectives said they do not know why the boy set the fires.

No injuries were reported in either fire.

The boy has been charged with two counts of arson of an occupied building.

Detectives said they were interviewing the boy Thursday afternoon and planned to talk to his parents.
